Marae Reports

Pukerātā

·      Written Report presented by Friday.

Te Iringa

·      Oral report presented by Ron.

·      Marae involved with strategic planning.

·      The hapū is opposing local applications to the Northland Regional Council to take water.

Other Reports

Corrections

·      Oral report from Toko Nathan and Ratema Tamati.

·      Succesful involvement with the Ngāpuhi Festival.

·      Corrections is able to support hapū development with community workers.

·      Marae noho for staff.

·      Ra is able to assist people to gain employment with corrections.

Police

·      Oral report from Arthur McLean.

·      Concern about gang presence in Kaikohe.

·      Crime rate is down.

Kaikohe Business Association

·      Oral report from Mike Fitzgerald.

·      Thanks to Arthur and the Kaikohe Police for their willingness to listen to the community.

·      Weaving project being developed to make baskets for bikes.

·      There are opportunities for cottage industries in Kaikohe.

·      More cruise liners next year. Need to find away to attract their passengers to the town.

·      Cycleway providing opportunities.

·      Mike wants to study rongoa and sought support from the takiwā for this. Several speakers spoke in support.

 

General

·      Rongoa Hui at the Senior Citizen’s hall 3 May. 

·      Discussion about marae as a venue for court sittings, as has just happened in Te Arawa.

o   This is part of Kohewhata’s charter.

o      Friday noted that Liz Marsden is meeting with the Youth Court Judges and perhaps that could be an opportunity to discuss the issue of the Youth Court being held at the Marae as has just happened in Te Arawa..

o   Several speakers in support of the idea.

o   Need to approach Greg Davis.

·      Marie thanked everyone for the outstanding support for the Kohewhata opening. At least 1,200 people attended.
