That Te Hauāuru Takiwā accept the nomination of Keith Wihongi as our proxy Trustee until our Takiwā AGM where a full process will be undertaken to fill the position vacated by Edith Tahere.

Marae Reports

Pukerātā

·      Wānanga continuing – Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. 

·      Kaihoe training is planned for the summer.

·      Renovation of church will go ahead when the weather improves.

Te Huruhi

·      New trustees have been elected.

·      The two-year youth programme has just finished.

·      Concerned about lack of kaumātua.

Other Reports

Local Government

·      Dr Irirangi Heke spoke about his work focused on Hākinakina Māori, and the possibilities that arise from the cycleway.

·      Phillip Grimshaw spoke about the Far North District Council Growth Strategy and Māori representation. Planning to set up a workshop to discuss these issues.

Education

·      Kelly Yakas spoke about a one year contract she has with Core Education to increase early childhood education participation in Kaikohe.

·      Joanne Kiro spoke about her work with Ka Hikitia programme. Joanne is working to strengthen Early Childhood Centres.

·      John Tapene gave an update from Kaikohe schools. 8 September Laughing Samoans at the College. 13 September Cultural Festival. Two homes available for first home buyers. Local churches talking with schools about Bible in schools.

Kaikohe Business Association

·      Steve Sangster, Kaikohe Business Association Chairperson spoke about recent activities and initiatives:

o   Taking advantages of opportunities – passing traffic – cycleway.

o   Improving the appearance of the town. Seeking community involvement.

o   Business Improvement District for Kaikohe.

General

·      Tautoro’s Finest Loser is coming to Māhuhu-ki-te-rangi marae. They are also active with Zumba 6-7pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, and developing a two-year Youth programme with Ngāpuhi Iwi Social Services.

·      Chairman Sid talked about a vision for poupou at the entrances to the town and on the cycleway.

·      Kohewhata is becoming involved in tourism.

·      Sid and Gwen spoke in support of a model pā in Kaikohe but not on the old dump site.
